Hey, in today’s busy world, I would give my left leg to find a home cooked meal that…
1) The kids like AND
2) Won’t add to my waistline
…I know it can seem like a daunting task (and don’t forget time consuming!). Besides, who wants to whip up a Martha Stewart feast after working all day or taking care of the kids?
But let’s face it, you have to eat and so do they. And actually, cooking for your family is great way to bond with your kids and/or husband. So the real barrier is…
You need some base ingredients that fill you up, that taste good, but aren’t going to destroy your diet. So there are a couple of staples that come to mind right off the starting line…
1. The Basics: Bonesless, skinless chicken
If you don’t know how great this one is for you then you’ve been living in a cave. First off, it’s about as low of calories in relation to how much protein it gives you.
And if you haven’t realized it yet, protein is GREAT for boosting your metabolism - which means it’s great for your diet.
2. The Chicken MISTAKE
Now the trick here is that we’e all been taught to include some rice, bread, or potatos to be served next to it on the table. That’s a MISTAKE.
All of those items are wasted carbs that add to your belly, but don’t necessarily fill you up or provide nutritional value. Did you know the reason people in China are skinny is not because they eat a lot of rice? They’re skinny because they don’t eat much at all… it’s not the rice that makes them skinny. So stop serving it.
Your metabolism works harder, and burns more calories from eating chicken than that bread, rice, or potatos. The same goes for red meat (although be careful because there are many more calories in red meat than in Chicken).
Let’s tackle the next tip.
3. Preparation is Key
How you cook your food is almost as important as what you eat. For example, let’s look at that same chicken breast.
If you roll it in eggs, bread crumbs, and then fry it in vegetable oil you just added over 500 calories to one piece of chicken. THAT’s A LOT!!
If you rubbed lemon pepper with a little season salt and put it on the bbq grill then you just saved yourself and your family all of those calories. Heck, depending on their age you can ask one of your kids to do the bbq work for you since it seems ‘fun’ to bbq.
So with just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time can provide a very tasty and healthy meal for you and your family. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the task of cooking, you can take simple steps to get you going.
4. The Simple Stuff
So let’s throw out a couple of other simple tips to help you out:
• Plan recipes over the weekend so you know what you are going to make each day
• Shop for the ingredients as a family to get them excited about the meal
• Prepare healthy meals over the weekend and freeze food to reheat during the week
• Have your kids help with the ingredient preparation
• Cook food that has 10 or fewer ingredients…it makes it easier to handle…and usually helps the individual flavors stand out
Plus, cooking at home can be so much healthier (and less expensive) than eating out or brining home fast food. You can help your kids broaden their taste horizons by adding new vegetables and spices/herbs to the food you prepare.
